Let me start out by saying that I’m a long-time user of Genz Benz and now Genzler products, so when I purchased the MG800+ my expectations were very high. In a nutshell, Jeff hit a home run with this amp. I used the MG800 (non +) for many trouble-free years and was very happy, and now the MG800+ has taken performance and convenience to a new level. The added features and slightly different voicing really make this amp a top choice for bassists. The HPF, dual controls for the 2 contours, and the pair of semi-parametric mid controls are very useful. I never use any sort of drive so I can’t comment on that. I will say that if this amp wasn’t available, I would be happy using the original MG800 for the rest of my playing days.
I play in a band with two guitarists, a drummer on electronic drums, and myself on electric bass. Both guitars, the drums, and voices go through the PA, and my Genzler rig carries the room. One guitarist usually plays an amplified acoustic 12-string, and the other plays a variety of amplified acoustic and electric guitars. The mix can get very busy. I always use the HPF at around 9 o’clock to filter out unwanted very low frequencies. I use both the A and B contours, individually set, and foot switchable. This allows me to get under and support the mix, or punch right into the mix, depending on the song. I have not had a chance to experiment too much with the mid controls, but I know they will be very useful if needed (I can say that this amp sounds great with no EQ adjustments at all).
In all the years using Jeff’s products I have never had a single issue with the equipment, and anytime I had product questions Jeff was always available and very friendly. I am confident that this amp will provide many years of trouble-free service. Any bassist looking for a new amplifier needs to consider this amp!
